Matilda's surgery was successful. Her hepatic shunt was as big as the vena cava. She is still on her special L/D diet and some pills but all is going well. She has had no seizuring (a common side effect of such surgery). ATM she does have some kidney stones in her kidneys which our vets hope will dissolve with time. They are resultant of her liver not functioning properly. Our vets now expect her to have a normal healthy life and she should grow to normal size. She will need regular vet checkups with tests for the rest of her life to keep her as healthy as possible.
Update 5 Feb: Matilda had further blood tests and ultrasound of her kidneys. The kidney stones are not obstructing urine flow and our vets expect they will all dissolve in time. We are throttling back on her medications, and she is now eating 25% normal food mixed with her liver diet food. She weighs about 14.7kg and has a lot more energy than before.
Matilda is ready for a home. She is playful and social with other small to medium sized dogs. She is very affectionate and very puppyish. She needs a family with energy and time to train and play with her.
